Being involved in a car accident can be devastating. However, if you were at fault for the accident, the situation can become more stressful and overwhelming. You will not only have to worry about dealing with the damage to your own vehicle, but also with the injuries and damage caused to the other party involved. Here are some important things you must do:
Don’t admit fault: Even if you believe that the accident was your fault, don’t admit it. Keep your conversations with the other driver and passengers in the other car limited. Avoid talking about how the accident happened, or who might have been at fault.
Call the police: Even if nobody was injured or if the damage to either of the vehicles doesn’t look serious or expensive, you should still call the police. Calling the police and having them file a report is always the best practice.
Be honest with the police: Be honest and accurate when you relay information to the police about how the accident happened. Do not lie.
Take photographs: Take as many pictures as you can of the accident scene and the damage to both vehicles. Be sure to take pictures of skid marks on the road, stop signs, speed limit signs in the area and other traffic control devices.
Get names of witnesses: Get the names and contact details of any passengers in the other car, as well as the driver. If there were other people who witnessed the accident, try to get their names and contact information as well. Your lawyer and the insurance company may want to contact them to verify the chain of events.
Call your insurance company: Call your insurance company to report the accident as soon as possible or, at the latest, by the next day. Tell them exactly what happened. If you fail to comply with the requirement of the insurance company, they can deny your coverage.
